Puakea at Grove Farm originally opened its first ten holes in 1989. Designed as a residential course in the center of Kauai, the first holes were in-play in 1993 when Hurricane Iniki struck the Hawaiian Islands and devastated most of Kauai's economy. In spite of having 10 holes (one of which is "thrown out" during the round to allow for a USGA approved round) Sports Illustrated Magazine names it one of the Ten Best Nine Hole Courses in the United States.

The Grove Farm Company operated the 10-hole course, now known as Puakea until 2000 when the historic Grove Farm Company was purchased by Steve Case, creator of AOL, whose family has historic ties to the property.

The course features expansive fairways, strategic bunkering, and very impressive background views to the surrounding Pali Cliffs. The "signature hole" is the 6th, a par three of 175 yards which plays some 80 feet downhill to a green alongside an ancient sugar cane irrigation lake with a backdrop of the Kalepa Ridge.
